Batumi – The Amazing City by the Black Sea

I still remember the first time I arrived in Batumi — the scent of the sea, the hum of the city, the feeling that something special was about to happen. There was light everywhere, laughter in the air, and a sense of freedom that wrapped around me like a warm breeze. I didn’t just visit Batumi — I felt it. And somewhere between the waves, the sunsets, and the endless boulevard, the city quietly found its way into my heart.

Let me tell you the story of this amazing city by the Black Sea.

How do you even begin to tell the story of this fantastic city?
There’s just so much to say… so much to feel.

Let’s start from the beginning.
It was the year 2012 — not that long ago, yet it feels like an eternity. Back then, a small seaside town in the southwest of Georgia began to rise from the sand and dreams.

And what a rise it was.
Batumi became living proof that dreams do come true. From a quiet coastal town, it grew into Georgia’s very own Dubai — or perhaps its Las Vegas — a dazzling, ever-expanding metropolis that now draws travelers from every corner of the world.
It’s modern, fast-growing, full of life and light — the kind of city that makes you wonder, how did all of this appear here so quickly?

Because it’s true: Batumi is unlike anywhere else.

Where the Sea Meets the Sky

Batumi sits gracefully on the Black Sea coast, nestled between the Chorokhi River to the south and the Korolistkali River to the north.
The shoreline curves in a shape that almost looks like the letter Z — or perhaps like a tooth jutting into the sea.
When you approach the city from the north, you see it rising like a peninsula kissed by the waves — a skyline that seems to float between sea and sky.

It’s breathtaking, every single time.

That was a piece of my heart shared with you. If it resonated, or if you have any thoughts to share, I would be truly grateful to hear from you.
The Beating Heart of the City – Batumi Boulevard

If Batumi has a soul, you’ll find it along the Boulevard, also known as the Seafront Promenade. It stretches for almost 10 kilometers, from the harbor in the north all the way to the airport in the south.

Palm trees sway along wide walking paths lined with parks, bike lanes, playgrounds, cafés, restaurants, and laughter. There’s music, sunshine, the scent of the sea — a perfect mix of calm and celebration. I’ve traveled to many places, but this… this is something special.
It’s simply enchanting..

Love, Steel, and Motion

Continue your walk and you’ll soon reach one of Batumi’s most famous landmarks — the moving sculpture of Ali and Nino.
Ali, a Muslim from Azerbaijan, and Nino, a Georgian princess, fall in love — but war tears them apart. In 2010, Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze brought their story to life with two giant metallic figures that move toward each other every evening at 7 PM. They slowly merge into one another, and just when they seem to touch — they pass through, never truly connecting.

A story of love and loss, captured in steel. It’s haunting, beautiful, unforgettable.

The Ferris Wheel and the Alphabet Tower

Just behind the statue spins the Ferris Wheel, 55 meters tall, turning slowly above the Black Sea. Each rotation lasts about ten minutes — ten minutes of wind, laughter, and views that stretch to infinity. Even though some nearby skyscrapers block part of the view, it doesn’t matter. When the sea unfolds in front of you and the Caucasus Mountains rise in the distance — it’s pure magic.

Next comes one of Batumi’s architectural wonders: the Alphabet Tower. At 130 meters high, its spiraling design incorporates all 33 letters of the Georgian alphabet, symbolizing the uniqueness of the Georgian language. It looks like a DNA helix, a poetic fusion of science and identity.

At the top, there’s a rotating restaurant that makes a full 360-degree turn in one hour. Imagine sipping a cappuccino as the city slowly moves around you — sea, sky, lights — all in a single spin.

Dancing Fountains and Bamboo Dreams

Further along the boulevard, the promenade opens into wide parks and one of Batumi’s most beautiful scenes — the Singing Fountain. Jets of water sway and leap to the rhythm of music, shimmering under colorful lights. You could sit there for hours, just watching the show and soaking in the moment.

Next to the fountain lies the Bamboo Grove, a peaceful patch of whispering green. And right behind it, the Batumi Colonnades, elegant white pillars that add a touch of classical grace to this vibrant modern city.

Above them stands another local icon — the Le Méridien Hotel. Originally meant to be a technological university, it was later sold and redesigned into a luxury hotel. A Ferris wheel was even attached to its façade for artistic flair — though never finished — yet it still stands as a symbol of Batumi’s wild creativity. This is, after all, the “Singapore of the Black Sea.”

A Symphony of Towers

As you keep walking, the skyline grows taller.
Sheraton, Hilton, Marriott — world-class hotels line the shore, each with its own daring architecture, each adding to the city’s modern rhythm.

Next comes the Batumi Dolphinarium, a favorite for families and friends.
It’s a place of joy, laughter, and applause — where dolphins leap and play in perfect harmony with the music. Right beside it lies Lake Nuri, surrounded by a charming walking path and shaded by trees — a lovely escape on hot summer days.

Flying Over the City

Right next to the harbor, where the promenade begins, stands the Argo Cable Car. Hop on, and in minutes you’re gliding over the rooftops of old Batumi, floating towards a hill that overlooks the entire city.
The view from up there?
It leaves you speechless — a sea of blue meeting a forest of modern towers, shimmering under the sun.

A Garden Above the Sea

Just a few kilometers north of the city, hidden among the hills, lies one of Batumi’s most magical treasures — the Batumi Botanical Garden. It’s a place where the world seems to breathe in color. Endless shades of green, exotic flowers from every corner of the globe, and trees so tall they seem to whisper to the clouds. The garden stretches along the cliffs above the Black Sea, offering views that take your breath away — the kind that make you stop walking just to stand in silence and take it all in.

What makes it even more fascinating is how it came to be. Entire trees are carefully transported here, roots and all, and replanted on these steep hillsides — a living testament to human dedication and love for nature. It’s more than just a garden. It’s a masterpiece of life itself, where the sea, the sky, and the earth meet in perfect harmony.

The City of the Future

Then comes the futuristic side of Batumi — and it’s truly something to see.

The Alliance Centropolis complex, with its three towers still rising, looks like a scene from a sci-fi movie.
Right next to it stands an eerie
Soviet-era building — intended as a family residence with a central courtyard, but today it feels like a mysterious ghost from the past, but somehow it's the closest to my heart!!!

Moments later, you find yourself among the dazzling new towers of Orby City — including the Orby Egg, shaped like a giant shell, and the Orby Towers, a cluster of gleaming giants.
Nearby is the
Public Service Hall, a building shaped like a bottle — playful, bold, unmistakably Batumi.

Here begins Juli Shartava Avenue, a wide, modern street lined with glass towers and cozy cafés.
You’ll also find
Lake Ardagani, with another musical fountain and a tiny peninsula where the Sunset Batumi restaurant awaits.
If you’re lucky, you’ll hear live Georgian folk music there — a sound that makes you smile without knowing why.

And don’t miss the Colosseum building, or Akropolis Restaurant, a perfect stop for lunch, dinner, or simply a quiet cappuccino by the sea.

From the City to the Sky

But the Boulevard doesn’t end there. It stretches further, past parks and shopping centers, all the way to the airport — yes, right to the runway! There’s something truly unique about watching planes land just a few hundred meters from the beach. Where else can you sit by the sea, drink a cold lemonade, and wave at an arriving airplane?

The Taste of Batumi

After such a long walk, it’s time to reward yourself — with good wine, great food, and even better company.

Start at Europe Square, a gorgeous plaza that feels straight out of Prague. Here you’ll find BK Restaurant, one of my absolute favorites. The food and drinks are amazing, the atmosphere cozy — like a library and a wine cellar combined. At night, it turns into a lively spot with live music, dancing, and a glass (or two) of fine Georgian wine.

Then there’s Batumi Piazza Square — small, charming, full of cafés, hotels, and that unmistakable Italian piazza feeling. During summer, it becomes a stage for live performances under the stars. You’ll want to stay until the last song fades.

And don’t miss Ukraine Restaurant, serving hearty Ukrainian dishes in a warm, welcoming setting.

When night falls, Batumi transforms once again. The clubs open, the beach bars come alive, and the music of summer takes over. Every autumn they’re taken down, and every spring — reborn again.
Because Batumi never stops dancing.

Until Next Time

I hope this story stirred your imagination and made you feel the pulse of this extraordinary city.
Batumi is more than just a destination — it’s a feeling. A place where the sea, the sky, and human creativity meet in perfect harmony.

Come, walk its boulevard, feel its energy, and let Batumi capture your heart — just as it did mine. 🌊✨

Batumi Beach – A Symphony of Sea and City

There’s a rhythm to Batumi’s beach that feels alive, as if the city itself breathes in harmony with the waves. The shoreline stretches endlessly along Batumi Boulevard, where the past whispers through the architecture and the present hums in the footsteps of passersby. Walking along the pebbled coast, the gentle crash of the Black Sea soothes the mind, and the salty breeze carries stories of distant horizons.

In the quiet of morning, the beach is a sanctuary, perfect for reflection or a slow, meditative stroll. By afternoon, laughter and life spill over as families play, cyclists glide past, and the cafés awaken with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

And then, as the sun dips toward the horizon, it drapes the sea in molten golds and soft pinks, casting a magic that makes time seem to pause. Batumi Beach is not merely a place; it’s a feeling, a sensory embrace that lingers long after the waves have faded from sight.
